Frequently asked questions

What is the FIRE movement?

FIRE stands for Financial Independence, Retire Early. It is a lifestyle movement focused on aggressive saving and investing to achieve financial independence much younger than traditional retirement age.

What is the 4% rule?

The 4% rule states that retirees can withdraw 4% of their portfolio annually without running out of money over a 30-year period. Your FIRE number is 25× your annual expenses (100 ÷ 4 = 25).

What is Lean FIRE vs Fat FIRE?

Lean FIRE means retiring with a minimal budget (typically under $40,000/year). Fat FIRE means retiring with a larger lifestyle budget (over $100,000/year). Barista FIRE means partial financial independence with part-time supplemental income.

How much do I need to save to retire early?

Multiply your expected annual retirement expenses by 25. For example, if you plan to live on $50,000 per year, your FIRE number is $1,250,000.

Disclaimer: Projections assume a constant rate of return. Market returns fluctuate and past performance does not guarantee future results. The 4% rule is a guideline, not a guarantee. This is not financial advice.
